The Society holds three unique ‘Property Sales Registers’ covering the period 1922-1927, which record all property sales in the then Shire of Nunawading. This was a period of land speculation, with people buying property, mainly land, in the Box Hill area. Purchasers came from both interstate and country Victoria as well as Melbourne suburbs. The Registers record the purchaser and their address, the type of property purchased (house/land/shop) and the general location – mostly the name of the Estate, but sometimes the Street name. The Registers generally, but not always, list the vendor as well. A reference number will lead to the Rate Book entry, which will then allow tracking through the yearly Rate Books. The first Register, covering the Box Hill area only, has now been unloaded and can be found on the ‘Our Collection’ page. Registers for Surrey Hills and Burwood will follow when completed.
